ഓണച്ചിന്തകള്: വേലന് പൂശാലിയുടെ ദൈവങ്ങള്
പതിവുതെറ്റിക്കാതെ ഈ ഓണക്കാലത്തും ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണനെയും അര്ജുനനെയും പാഞ്ചാലിയെയുംകൊണ്ട് അയാള് ഊരു ചുറ്റാനിറങ്ങുകയാണ്. ബെന്-ടെന്നിനെയും ട്രാന്സ്ഫോമേഴ്സിനെയും കുങ്ഫു പാണ്ടയെയും മാത്രം കണ്ട് ശീലിച്ച-ശീലിക്കുന്ന-പുതിയ കുട്ടികളുടെ ലോകത്തേയ്ക്ക്.
ഇത് വേലന് പൂശാലി. പാവക്കഥകളി എന്ന അത്യപൂര്വ്വ കലാരൂപത്തിന്റെ അവസാന ഉപാസകരില് ഒരാള്. അരപ്പതിറ്റാണ്ടിലേറെക്കാലമായി മുടക്കമില്ലാതെ ഇയാള് ഓണക്കാലത്ത് തെക്കേ മലബാറിലെ ഗ്രാമങ്ങളെ തുയിലുണര്ത്തുപാട്ടുമായി തോറ്റിയുണര്ത്താന് തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട്.
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ ലക്കിടിയ്ക്കടുത്ത് പരത്തിപ്പുള്ളി ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ 'പണ്ടാര' വിഭാഗത്തില്പ്പെട്ടവരാണ് പാവക്കഥകളിക്കാര്. ഇവിടെ പണ്ടാര വിഭാഗത്തില്പ്പെട്ട 137-ഓളം കുടുംബങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഇതില് മൂന്ന് കുടുംബങ്ങളാണ് പാവക്കഥകളി ഇപ്പോഴും തുടരുന്നത്. ഇവരില്തന്നെ ഊരുചുറ്റി വീടുകളില്ചെന്ന് കളി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് വേലന് പൂശാലി മാത്രം. പൂശാലിക്ക് പാവക്കഥകളി വെറും നേരമ്പോക്കോ ധനസമ്പാദനമാര്ഗ്ഗമോ അല്ല, ഗുരുകാരണവന്മാരായി പകര്ന്നുകിട്ടിയ പൈതൃകത്തിന്റെ പവിത്രമായ പിന്തുടര്ച്ചയാണ്.
കുമിഴ് മരത്തില് നിര്മ്മിച്ചമുഖത്തോടുകൂടിയ കൈയ്യുറപ്പാവകളാണ് (Glow puppet) കഥകളിപ്പാവകള്. യഥാര്ത്ഥ കഥകളിവേഷങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു മിനിയേച്ചര് പതിപ്പ്. ചെറുതെത്രമനോഹരം എന്ന ചൊല്ലിനെ അന്വര്ത്ഥമാക്കുന്ന സൗന്ദര്യമാണിവയ്ക്ക്. നിലത്തിരുന്ന്, ഇടതുകൈയ്യില് പാവയും വലതുകൈയ്യില് ചേങ്ങിലയും കൊട്ടി കഥകളിപ്പദങ്ങള് പാടിക്കൊണ്ടാണ് പാവക്കഥകളി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.
ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണന്, അര്ജ്ജുനന്, പാഞ്ചാലി, നകുലന്, സഹദേവന്, കീചകന്, ഹനുമാന് തുടങ്ങിയ ഒട്ടേറെ പാവരൂപങ്ങള് കഥകളിക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. വേലന് പൂശാലിയുടെ കൈയ്യില് ഇപ്പോള് അര്ജുനനും ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണനും പാഞ്ചാലിയും മാത്രമേയുള്ളൂ. തലമുറകള് കൈമാറിയ ഈ പൈതൃകപ്പാവകള്, തന്റെ പിതാവ് പാപ്പന് പൂശാലിയില്നിന്നുമാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കിട്ടിയത്.
പഴയകാല കേരളത്തിന്റെ ദൃശ്യലോകത്തിന് ഇവ നല്കിയിരുന്ന നിറക്കാഴ്ച എത്രയാണെന്ന് ടച്ച് സ്ക്രീന് ഫോണിന്റെ ലോകത്തിരിക്കുന്ന നമുക്ക് ഒരിക്കലും സങ്കല്പിക്കാനാവില്ല. ഒരുപാട് കാഴ്ച്ചക്കാരുണ്ടായിരുന്ന പഴയകാലകളിയെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുമ്പോള് വേലന് പൂശാലിക്ക് നൂറുനാവാണ്. ചെറുസംഘങ്ങളായാണ് പണ്ട് കഥകളിക്കാര് ഊരു ചുറ്റിയിരുന്നത്. ഒരു സംഘത്തില് ചെണ്ട, ചേങ്ങില, ഇലത്താളം തുടങ്ങിയ വാദ്യക്കാരും
നാലഞ്ച് കളിക്കാരും ഉണ്ടാവും. ഓരോ ദേശത്തും ഇവര്ക്ക് സ്ഥിരമായ ഇടത്താവളങ്ങളുണ്ട്-കളിക്കമ്പക്കാരായ പ്രമാണിമാരുടെ തറവാടുകള്. അവിടെ താമസിച്ച് ചുറ്റുമുള്ള വീടുകളില് കളി അവതരിപ്പിക്കും. അവിടെ നിന്നും അടുത്ത ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക്. ഊരുചുറ്റലിനിടയ്ക്ക് സ്വന്തം വീടുകാണാന് പൂതിയുണ്ടാവുമ്പോള് മാത്രമാണ് വീട്ടിലേക്കു വരുന്നത്. പിന്നീട് വീണ്ടും സംഘത്തോടൊപ്പം ചേരും. മിക്ക രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും അവരവരുടെ തനത് കലയുടെ പാവക്കഥകളിരൂപം ഉണ്ട് എന്നത് ഇവിടെ പ്രസക്തമാണ്.
പണ്ടുകാലത്ത് രാത്രി തുടങ്ങുമായിരുന്ന കളി പുലരുംവരെ തുടരുമായിരുന്നത്രെ. പിന്നീട് കാലംകൊണ്ട് അത് ഒന്നുരണ്ടുമണിക്കൂര് നേരത്തേക്ക് ചുരുങ്ങി. ഉത്തരാ സ്വയംവരം, ദുര്യോധനവധം, കീചകവധം, കല്യാണസൗഗന്ധികം, ഭാഗവതം, രുഗ്മാംഗചരിതം, നളചരിതം തുടങ്ങി 64-ഓളം കഥകള് അവതരിപ്പിക്കാറുണ്ട്. യഥാര്ത്ഥ കഥകളിയിലെപോലെ പാവക്കഥകളിയിലും മനോധര്മ്മം ആടാറുണ്ടെന്ന് പൂശാലി. പാവക്കഥകളിക്കുപുറമെ ആണ്ടിയൂട്ടും(സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യപൂജ) ഇവര് നടത്താറുണ്ട്. എല്ലാവര്ഷവും ഇവരെക്കൊണ്ട് ആണ്ടിയൂട്ടും പാവക്കൂത്തും നടത്തിയിരുന്ന തറവാടുകള് ധാരാളമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
അന്നും ഇന്നും കുട്ടികളാണ് പാവക്കഥകളിയുടെ മുഖ്യകാഴ്ചക്കാര്. 'ആണ്ടി വന്നോ?, ആ കുട്ടികള്ക്ക് കുറച്ച് വേഷങ്ങള് കാണിച്ചുകൊടുക്കൂ' എന്നു പറയുന്ന കാരണവന്മാര് ഇന്നില്ല. കഥകളിക്കമ്പക്കാരെപ്പോലെ, ധാരാളം പാവക്കഥകളിക്കാരും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. 'ഇന്ന കഥയിലെ ഈഭാഗം കളിക്കു' എന്ന് പറയാന് ചങ്കൂറ്റമുള്ളവര്. ഇന്ന് ദുര്യോധനവധം കളിക്കൂ എന്ന് പറയുന്നവരോട് ദുര്യോധനവധത്തിലെ ഏത് ഭാഗം എന്ന് തിരിച്ച്ചോദിക്കുമ്പോള് അവരുടെ മുഖം വിളറുന്നത് ഒരു ഉള്ചിരിയാലെ പൂശാലി നോക്കിക്കാണാറുണ്ട്. ഇന്നാര്ക്കും ഇതിനെപ്പറ്റി ഒന്നും അറിയില്ല. അവരെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് പാവകള് വെറും വേഷങ്ങള് മാത്രമാണ്.
പാവക്കഥകളിയുടെ പുനരുദ്ധാരണത്തിനായി 1982-ല് കലാകാരന്മാര് ചേര്ന്ന് പരത്തിപ്പുള്ളി പാവക്കഥകളിസംഘം രൂപീകരിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ഈ സംഘത്തിന് ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്കകത്തും പുറത്തുമായി ഒരുപാട് സ്ഥലങ്ങളില് കഥകളി അതരിപ്പിക്കാനായിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നാല് ഇന്ന് ശരീരമനുവദിക്കാത്തതുമൂലം ദൂരയാത്രയ്ക്കൊന്നും പോവാറില്ല. പക്ഷെ ഓണക്കാലത്തെ ഊരുചുറ്റല് പൂശാലി ഈ എണ്പതാം വയസ്സിലും തുടരുന്നു. വാര്ധക്യത്തെയും അസുഖങ്ങളെയും വകവയ്ക്കാതെ. പാവകളെയുംകൊണ്ട് ഏതു സമയത്തും ഏതു വഴിയിലൂടെയും നടക്കാന് പൂശാലിക്ക് ഭയമില്ല. കാരണം കൃഷ്ണനേയും രാമനെയും കൊണ്ട് കഥകളിയാടുന്ന കലാകാരന് ദൈവപരിവേഷമാണ്. പാവകളെ ചോദിച്ച് വിദേശങ്ങളില് നിന്നുപോലും ആളുകള് വരാറുണ്ട്. അവരോടൊക്കെ പൂശാലിക്ക് ഒന്നേ പറയാനുള്ളൂ, ഇത് എന്റെ അന്നമാണ്, ഐശ്വര്യമാണ്. ഇത് ഞാനാര്ക്കും കൊടുക്കില്ല.
പുതിയ തലമുറക്കാര് ഈ രംഗത്ത് വരാത്തതില് പൂശാലിക്ക് ഒട്ടും പരിഭവമില്ല. പാവക്കഥകളിക്കാരന് ഇന്നത്തെ സമൂഹത്തില് എത്രത്തോളം ഗ്ലാമറുണ്ടെന്് പൂശാലിക്ക് നന്നായിട്ടറിയാം. ഭാണ്ഡവും തൂക്കി നാടുചുറ്റി നടക്കുന്ന പാവക്കഥകളിക്കാരനോട് 'ഡോ, തനിക്ക് വല്ല ജോലിക്കും പോയിക്കൂടെ?' എന്നുതന്നെയായിരിക്കും ആളുകള് ചോദിക്കുക.
കഥകളിയെ ലോകമറിയുമ്പോള്, പാവക്കഥകളിയെ നാം സൗകര്യപൂര്വ്വം മറക്കുകയാണ്. അല്ലെങ്കില് അറിയാതെ പോവുകയാണ്. മാര്ക്കറ്റിംഗ് അറിയാത്ത യഥാര്ത്ഥകലാകാരന് എപ്പോഴും പരിധിക്കുപുറത്താണ്. കല അയാളുടെ സാധനയാണ്, ശ്വാസമാണ്, അത് അയാളോടെ അണഞ്ഞുപോവേണ്ട വെളിച്ചമല്ല. വരുന്ന തലമുറയ്ക്ക് ഇതൊക്കെയാണ് നമ്മുടെ പൈതൃകം, ഇതൊക്കെയാണ് നമ്മുടെ സംസ്കാരം എന്ന് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കാന് ചില വേലന് പൂശാലിമാര് നമ്മുടെയിടയില് ഉണ്ടായേ തീരൂ. തന്റെ പാവകളെ തുടച്ച് മിനുക്കി ഭാണ്ഡത്തില്കെട്ടി തോളിലിട്ട് വേലന് പൂശാലി ഊരുചുറ്റാനിറങ്ങുകയാണ് നാട്ടിടവഴികളിലൂടെ, പാടവരമ്പുകളിലൂടെ, ഗ്രാമങ്ങളില്നിന്ന് ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലേക്ക്, ഓണവരവറിയിക്കാന്...

We have two new neighbours. Yes, two house sparrows (angadi kuruvi). They have started building their nest last July under the shutter holder of a shop next door. Sad to say, the shop has stayed closed for a while now. I'll have to keep watching...

Gramophone, Order! Order!! Order!!!
Gramaphone. An apt title for the memoirs of the famous mappilappattu singer Eranjoli Moosa. The Malayalam movie goers would have had a glimpse of him in a movie strangely titled the same.In Kamal's 'Gramaphone' he starred as Louie Uncle. I found this book quite interesting and different. He talks at length about his childhood spent at Thalassery, his youth and his life spent as a singer. Did you know that he has visited foreign countries over 200 times just to sing? I found it quite admirable. When you think of the low profile such people keep and the lack of opportunities, this truly is a magnificent achievement. The book is compiled by Thaha madai. The typography of the cover is courtesy ink pen. For background image, yellow to black colour is used.
In designing the cover for Order Order Order by Hon. Minister Prof. K.V. Thomas, I used cartoons done by Sudhir Nath (www.sudheernath.com). With the help of these cartoons I have made the cover look like its a clipping from a newspaper. Somehow in Kerala, politics and newspaper go hand in hand!

Death at Intervals, Half of a yellow sun
It's quite often said that one shouldn't use garish colours(100% Cyan or 100% Magenta) for offset printing. You may feel like breaking the norm and but you might want to listen to this because unfortunately, it is right. Because if you use them, the design might look great on the monitor but the print result will be poor. If you still want to use those colours, you might have to add a bit of other colours as well, 5-20% or use some other texture. I, personally, love to use garish colours.
Now let me relate the sad result of my little experiment. Death at Intervals, a powerful book by Jose Saramago. The Malayalam title is Maranam maarunna idanerathu. I used cyan as the main colour and added a 10% yellow and 10% magenta. Yellow (C=5, M=10, Y=100, K=0) for the title and the main image. The cover looked really pretty and classy when i used black and white for the text. But horror of horrors! When the printed book came, I found a slight colour variation among the copies. I haunted every DC Bookshop in Kochi and my conclusion was finalised. Shattered!!
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. One of the gifted authors of the new millennium. Her Half of a Yellow Sun was translated by DC title Oru Manja suryante Pathi. A book I personally love.

I find it interesting to design covers for books in a series. You have to look for a common theme and then you have to bring it on to the covers, not with words but with something else. A thread should connect all the covers and that special link can be colours, elements or typography.
